Anna M. Sweeney, 73, of Long Branch, passed away Friday, June 30th, at Monmouth Medical Center. Anna was born and raised in Philadelphia, on July 9, 1943, one of 10 children born to the late Elizabeth and Francis McIlhenny. Anna moved to Long Branch 42 years ago where she and her late husband Robert settled to raise their family. She was a communicant of Our Lady, Star of the Sea Parish. Anna worked in the sales department of the West Long Branch K-Mart for over 20 years and her love of children led her to work in the cafeteria of the Woodmere School in Eatontown for many years. Anna's true calling was her devotion and love for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her home was affectionately referred to as the "Sweeney Mansion." Whether you just stopped by to have some of her delicious potato salad and potato soup, or you needed a place to stay the night, her door was always open to everyone .
Anna was predeceased by her beloved husband, Robert B. Sweeney in 2012 and her siblings Francis McIlhenny, Edward McIlhenny, Elizabeth Baraniecki, Eileen Fannon and her grandson Anthony. She is survived by her 5 sons and daughters-in-law; Kevin and Adele of Long Branch, Kenneth and Maritza of Delaware, Robert and Donna of Browns Mills, Brian of Monmouth Beach, Mark of Florida, and her 2 daughters and sons-in-law; Ann Marie Sweeney and Mike Largent of Florida , Mary Sweeney-Pomphrey and Daniel of Long Branch. Anna also leaves behind 2 brothers; Thomas McIlhenny of Warminster and Daniel McIlhenny of Indiana; 3 sisters; Teresa Vandivier of Indiana, Dolores Courchain of Warminster, Margaret McIlhenny of Philadelphia ; 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
