Doris Edna Berends, 90, a longtime resident of Belford, peacefully passed away Friday, February 9th, with her family by her side. Doris was born in Union Beach on March 10, 1927, to the late Martha Miller and Charles Behr. She grew up in the Bayshore area, lived in Florida and Michigan for a while until she returned to the Bayshore area. Doris worked as a cashier at the Port Monmouth Foodtown for many years. She was a member of the Port Monmouth VFW 2179 and the Middletown Elks Ladies Auxiliaries and the Belford United Methodist Church. Doris enjoyed spending time with her family, playing bingo and cards and was an accomplished Ladies Horseshoe competitor in her younger years.
Doris was predeceased by her beloved husband of 60 years, Elmer "Al" Berends in 2006. She is survived by their four daughters and sons-in-law; Dorrie and Al Morin of Indiana, Carol Ann and Pete VanMater of Freehold, Norma Jean and Joe Thomas of Freehold and Betty Jo and Mike Anghelone of Belford, along with their son Allen and his wife Cindy Berends of Michigan. Doris also leaves behind her sister Shirley Therien; two brothers, Clarence "Corpy" Miller and Russell Miller; 15 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.
Friends and relatives may pay their respects on Thursday, February 22nd from 4-7 pm and again on Friday from 9-10 am just prior to the funeral service at Scott & Kedz Home for Funerals, 153 Church St., Belford. The burial and committal will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
