Doris E. Bower, 80, of Highlands, passed away Sunday, July 23rd. Doris was born in Kelso, WA. She grew up on the West coast and lived in San Francisco before moving to Middletown in 1967. After her husband's passing, Doris moved to Highlands. Doris was a housewife, but went back to college. After receiving her degree she became a professor and taught for a while. She then went on to work for the State of NJ Department of Labor in Unemployment for 14 years, finally retiring in 2007. Doris was a member of King of Kings Lutheran Church, and the President and Secretary for the Highland's Garden Club. She maintained all the planters down the main street of Highlands and their town parks. Doris enjoyed gardening in her yard, reading, and shopping; she could help you find anything that you needed and if given an option, she would shop in stores that benefitted local communities.
Doris was predeceased by her husband Robert Bower in 1996. She is survived by her 2 sons and daughters -in-law; Michael and Donna Bower of Atlantic Highlands; Jason and Meghan Bower along with their daughter Ruth of Morrisville, Pa. Doris also leaves behind her sister Sharon Shelley of Oregon. Doris was predeceased by her step son Mark Bower, but is survived by his children Drew and Rusty.
Doris will be laid to rest along side her husband at Holmdel Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held at King of Kings Lutheran Church, 250 Harmony Rd., Middletown at 11:00 am on Saturday, July 29th.
