Gary A. Johnson, Sr., 80, of Eatontown, passed away Sunday, February 2nd. Gary was born in Long Branch, on October 2, 1939, a son of the late Armenia and Samuel C Johnson. He grew up in Fair Haven and lived several places before settling in Eatontown 40 years ago. Gary worked as a computer systems analyst at Fort Monmouth for many years. He was an avid pool player. He played in the APA Pool League and enjoyed playing with his friends at the American Legion post 266 in Neptune. He also played softball with the Fort Monmouth leagues where he was their pinch runner. Gary was a singer for the GTE Band (Good Times Experience Band) He was known to sing or whistle a tune during his day and his colleagues at Fort Monmouth fondly gave him the nickname "The Whistler" because they always knew when he was coming down the hall whistling his happy tunes. Gary was a true gentleman and will be greatly missed by those who knew him.
Gary is survived by his beloved wife of 37 wonderful years, Diane Johnson and his 6 children; sons, Gary, Jr., Marc, Christopher, Jason, Matthew, who was also his devoted caretaker for the past 3 years, and his daughter Cherri Dickson. Gary also leaves behind a sister, Sarah Williams-O'Neal, his cousin, who he was raised with, Maureen Perkins and 11 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his infant daughter, Kim.
Friends and relatives may pay their respects on Saturday from 2-5 pm. A Funeral Service will conclude the evening and a private cremation will follow.
