John Joseph McDonnell, III, 65, of Port Monmouth, passed away Thursday, April 13th. John was born in Green Point, Brooklyn, New York on November 1, 1957, a son of the late Dorothy and John McDonnell, Jr. His family left Green Point when John was a small child and moved to Middletown to raise their family. John has lived in Middletown most of his life and settled in Port Monmouth 20 years ago. He graduated from Mater Dei High School and then went on to graduate from Kean College. John was a devout communicant of St. Catherine's Parish in Middletown.
John retired as assistant grocery manager at Foodtown Supermarkets after working with the company over 31 years. John was a fan of the New England Patriots and Notre Dame. He enjoyed going out to the movies or he was happy at home watching episodes of Dr. Who. John was a sci-fi aficionado. He was also an excellent cook. He learned many of his cooking skills from his grandfather. In his younger years, John could often be found at the beach or out on a boat fishing.
John is survived by his wife of 31 years, Debbie McDonnell. He also leaves behind a brother, Joseph (Dawn) McDonnell and 3 sisters; Francis (Lee) McKinley, Dorothy (Thomas) Kennedy, and Patricia (Robert) Baker along with 10 nieces and nephews, his best friend Bobby (Eileen) Smith, and his beloved dog, Nala.
Friends and relatives may pay their respects on Tuesday from 5 - 8 pm and a Funeral Service will conclude the evening around 7:30 pm at Scott & Kedz Home for Funerals. A private cremation will follow.
