Marie E. Bernhard, 89, formerly of New York, passed away on Saturday, December 16th, at Bayside Manor surrounded by her family. Marie was born in Bronx, NY on October 10, 1934, a daughter of the late Assunta "Sue" and Theodore, “Teddy” DeMartino. She was raised in Pelham Bay, Bronx, New York. After marrying Gilbert "Red" Bernhard on November 21, 1954, the young couple eventually settled in Bayside, Queens where they would raise their family. In 1985, after Red retired, they bought a home in the Hamptons and in Florida and would spend their retirement travelling between the two.
After raising her children, Marie went to work at her sister, Terry’s, paper company. She was an enterprising office manager at Neptune Paper in Queens, NY for 11 years. She was an active member of Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament Church in Bayside, Queens, where she was the Rosary Altar Society Past President. As part of the Rosary Altar Society, Marie spent many hours aiding the parish through fund- raising activities and to promote the spiritual growth of women of the parish.
Marie spent most of her time going to the numerous activities of her children and volunteering with the Cancer Society, her children’s sports teams and anything having to do with OLBS Parish. Marie had a very generous heart and if you were fortunate enough to know Marie, then you knew that you were always welcomed at her home. She had the ability to make you feel loved and safe in her company - she loved her family, friends and life! Always one to host a celebration and bring people together, she held memorable events (pool parties in the summer, and holiday feasts) for every occasion. Visitors always knew they would be served a plate of her legendary meatballs and gravy. Some recipes belong in the Smithsonian Institution!
Marie's favorite place to visit was the beach - she embraced life at the beach and loved the sand between her toes. Her grandchildren hold many memories of their Nan watching over them at the waterfront, enjoying the ocean waves with them, wrapping them with towels when they came out of the water, and always having a snack at the ready whenever they were hungry.
Marie and her husband, Red, spent many years as Snowbirds who wintered in Florida. Marie will fondly be remembered as a vibrant woman who was years ahead of her time - never judgmental in how one lived their life, always accepting and embracing. Most importantly, she was a loving and devoted wife, mother, nana, sister, aunt, friend, and "mom" to many.
Marie was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Gilbert "Red” Bernhard, in March of 2018. She was also predeceased by her sister Eleanor Ferrara.
Marie is survived by her three children; her daughter and son-in-law, Marie and Todd Weidman; and her two sons, Gil Bernhard and Teddy Bernhard. Marie also leaves behind a sister, Theodora "Terry" DeMartino along with seven devoted grandchildren; Christopher, Brandon, Matthew, Stephen, Susan, T.J. and Hunter
