Michael Burke Obituary

Michael David Burke, a man whose presence brought safety and comfort to all who knew him, passed away on September 2nd, 2025 at the age of 49. Born on August 2, 1976, in New York City, Michael was the cherished son of Carl and Elizabeth Burke. He had a rugged charm that endeared him to many and was loyal to a fault. With his street smarts and natural aptitude for understanding the complex, whether it be auto repair or mathematics, he made a living in the concrete jungle of NYC for the majority of his life before settling down in Belford, NJ 25 years ago.

Michael's life was a testament to his dedication and compassion, as evidenced by his long-standing commitment to the Covenant House in Newark. For 25 years, he served various roles with the nonprofit organization, before assuming his final position as the Director of Operations. Michael worked tirelessly at Covenant House, embodying their mission statement to keep kids off the streets. It was routine for Michael to receive work related SOS calls on his cellphone, especially on a day off, and he always answered. One word that truly conveys Michael’s personality, in work and personal life, is reliable. Everyone who knew him could always count on Michael to get the job done. Michael’s departure from Covenant House last year marked the end of a distinguished career that was filled with purpose and service. Covenant House was incredibly lucky to have had Michael in their employ.

A true family man, Michael's greatest pride and joy were his four daughters: Michaella, Tatyana, Laylah, and Stacy Jean-Phillippe. His love for them knew no bounds, and he instilled in them the values of kindness, adventure, and the importance of a good laugh. A free spirit who was notorious for going his own way, Michael made sure his daughters knew when to follow their instincts and say ‘screw the rules’. Michael was known for his "wit-icisms" and iconic catchphrases. He proudly instilled the lessons he had learned from the "school of hard knocks" to his daughters. "If something feels wrong, it probably is", "Be aware of your surroundings" and "it’s about working smarter not harder" are mantras Michael’s four daughters will always have on their hearts, thanks to their protective father. Nothing brought Michael greater joy than spending time with his daughters. They were his whole life. His brothers, Charles and Jeremiah Burke, and his sister, Jennifer Williams, will fondly remember Michael for his unshakeable character and the strong bonds they forged.

Michael's passion for life extended well beyond his professional and family commitments. He was an amazing mechanic, with a particular love for cars and motorcycles. His Hayabusa motorcycle, affectionately named "Bianca," was a symbol of his adventurous spirit. Michael was a thrill-seeker at heart, always in pursuit of the next adrenaline rush. Sky-diving, riding Bianca, braving the biggest and fastest roller coasters, are all examples of one fact: Michael never backed down from a good adventure.

His love for excitement was balanced by his appreciation for the great outdoors and the simple pleasures of life. Michael was an avid gamer, a sharpshooter at the pistol range, and an enthusiast of the natural world. He cherished the moments spent canoeing and fishing with his daughters, creating memories that would last a lifetime. Even a quiet evening at home watching a good movie brought him immense joy.

As we bid farewell to Michael David Burke, we celebrate a life lived to the fullest, a journey marked by joy, love, and an indomitable spirit. Michael was a living legend in the eyes of his daughters, a man whose life was filled with adversity and yet never blanched in the face of it. He was a gun-slinging cowboy, a grease monkey, a mathematician, an engineer, a friend, a husband, a brother, and most proudly, a father. Words cannot describe how deeply he will be missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Michael's memory will continue to inspire us to not take ourselves too seriously and live life to the fullest.
