Joseph Michael Cummings, 71, of Belford, passed away Monday, March 2nd. Michael was born in Queens, NY on October 20, 1948, one of 11 children born to the late Katherine and James Cummings. He moved to the Bayshore as a boy with his family. Michael worked in construction on and off for a while and Action Pest Control for many years where he became friends with many of his regular customers. Michael enjoyed playing poker with the guys and loved to host the Family Friday Night Dealer's Choice card games at his home for many years. He loved music and played the guitar. He was part of a band in his younger years. Michael was an avid Mets and Giants fan, and when he watched basketball, it was usually a Knicks game. Michael had an adventurous and earthy soul. He loved nature, animals (especially his dogs) and the outdoors. In the late 60's Michael worked on Wall Street and in the corporate world. He realized one day that that life was not for him and discovered a small island in Canada, 200 miles north of the border and decided this is where he wanted to be. He and his brothers-in-law chopped trees down to clear land and used the lumber to build a log cabin, all by hand. He spent many summers up there along with his family. This was his refuge and Michael's ashes will be scattered on that island so he can always be there.
Michael will always be remembered as everyone's Favorite Uncle. Everyone called him "Uncle Michael" even if they were not really related to him. Michael had a personality that drew people in and made you feel like family.
Michael is survived by five sisters, Claire Young; Paddy-Anne, wife of Jack Monahan; Regina Ferguson; Susan, wife of Ed Pirylis; Diane, wife of the late Gary Johnson; along with two brothers; James Cummings, husband of Sharon; and Richard Cummings. Michael also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings Carol-Ann, John Patrick, and Peter.
