Paul A. Murphy

Paul A. Murphy, affectionately known as "Murph," a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on October 13, 1946, in Long Branch, New Jersey, Paul was a proud lifelong resident of Leonardo, where he built a life full of love, service, and adventure.

Paul's journey was marked by his dedication to his country, serving in the US Army Air Force during the Vietnam War. His time in the military took him to Europe, where he embraced the opportunity to explore the continent, from the majestic Swiss Alps to the vibrant streets of Amsterdam. These experiences broadened his horizons and instilled in him a lifelong love of travel.

Upon returning to the States, Murph's life took a fortuitous turn when he met Robin, the love of his life. Together, they embarked on a nearly 52-year-long marriage, blessed with two sons, Paul, Jr. and Matthew, and a grandson, Maxwell, who brought immense joy to his life.

Professionally, Paul was a respected consulting engineer. His career at Charles J. Kupper, Inc in Piscataway was marked by his meticulous work and dedication. Later, he joined Greenman Pedersen, Inc. in Babylon, NY, where he took great pride in his involvement in rebuilding the Sea Bright bridge, a testament to his commitment to his community and his craft.

Paul's passion for service extended beyond his professional life. He was a Life member, Past President, Lieutenant, and Captain of the Brevent Park Fire Company in Leonardo. His leadership and commitment to the community were evident as he manned the Country Store Stand during the Brevent Park Fireman's Fair and later volunteered at the Atlantic Highlands Fireman's Fair. Paul's friendly and kind nature made him a beloved figure at these events.

An avid fisherman, Murph cherished the summers spent on his boat, participating in fluke tournaments, and enjoying the company of family and friends. He and Robin were fixtures by the State Marina, where they would spend evenings greeting neighbors and sharing the day's stories.

Paul's pride in his heritage was profound, as he was very proud to be part of the Roop family, one of the founding families of Leonardo. His grandfather, Ashley Roop, left a legacy that Paul honored through his own life of service and community involvement.

Paul A. Murphy's life was a tapestry of devotion to his family, service to his country and community, and a testament to the power of kindness and friendship. He will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him, and his legacy will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
