Randy Thompson Obituary

Randy Thompson, a cherished husband, father, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2025, surrounded by his wife, daughter and his best friends after a short fight with cancer. Born on July 19, 1960, in Rahway, he was raised in Elizabeth, where he met the love of his life, Mary Hnedak. The two were married on May 14, 1983.

Randy and Mary moved to Belford, New Jersey, where they raised their beloved daughter, Stephanie, affectionately nicknamed "Step-on-me" by her father. Randy's family was the center of his world, and he was a devoted husband and father who took great pride in his family's happiness and well-being.

For the past 24 years, Randy was a dedicated employee of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority. He spent his career on the Northern Division night crew. His respected knowledge of the roadways and strong work ethic led him to be a trainer for many on the Turnpike. He formed many life-long relationships there, some of whom came to see him in his final days, showing support to him and his family.

Randy loved nothing more than spending quality time with his daughter, whether they were out on the boat, remodeling the house, or going to a NY Jets game. His daughter lovingly referred to him as a "flip-flopper" at the annual Jets-Patriots game that they always attended. He always would magically become a Patriot's fan showing up in his Randy-Special Patriot's gear. Randy was also an avid fisherman, finding solace and joy in the tranquility of the water. He enjoyed traveling across the state to visit flea markets regularly with his best friends. He never needed anything but always seemed to find something there.

Randy's legacy is carried on by his devoted wife of 42 years, Mary Thompson, and their adored daughter, Stephanie. He also leaves behind his beloved dog, Betty, who was a constant companion and source of joy in his life.

Randy's passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him, but his spirit will continue to live on through the countless lives he touched. He will be remembered not only for the life he led but also for the love, kindness, and friendship he so freely gave.

Please join his family at a Memorial Gathering on Saturday, June 7th from 5 - 7pm at Scott & Kedz Home for Funerals. A Service will conclude the evening at 7 pm.
