Richard Cummings,80, of Middletown, a proud veteran, devoted family man, and friend to many, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2024. Born on October 27, 1944, in St. Albans, New York, Richard's life was one of service, love, and joy, which he shared generously with all who knew him.
After graduating from high school, Richard answered the call of duty and enlisted in the United States Marines. He served his country with honor and distinction through two tours during the Vietnam War. His time in the service was a defining period of his life, and he carried the pride of being a Marine throughout his entire life.
Following his military service, Richard settled in Florida, where he began working as a mail sorter in the post office. His dedication and hard work were evident in all he did. After several years, he returned to his roots in New Jersey and transitioned to a career as an air freight expeditor. Known for his adaptability and resourcefulness, Richard was often described as a "Jack of all trades, master of none," a testament to his wide-ranging skills and willingness to lend a hand wherever needed.
Richard's interests were as diverse as his abilities. He was an avid reader, always eager to explore new worlds and ideas through the pages of a book. Music was another of his passions, and he took great pleasure in creating CDs for his friends and family, sharing his eclectic taste and the joy of discovery. Golf provided him with both relaxation and challenge, and he could often be found on the greens, enjoying the camaraderie of the game. Photography was another hobby he enjoyed, capturing moments of beauty and significance through his lens.
Coming from a large and loving family, Richard was one of ten siblings. He is survived by his sister Susan and her husband Ed Pirylis, his sister Diane Johnson, widow of Gary Johnson, his brother James and his wife Sharon Cummings, brother-in-law, Jack Monahan and many nieces and nephews who will miss his presence dearly. He was predeceased by his siblings John Patrick Cummings, Michael Cummings, Peter Cummings, Claire Young, Regina Ferguson, and Paddy-Anne Monahan, as well as his parents, James and Katherine Cummings. Richard's family was the cornerstone of his life, and he cherished the time spent with them above all else.
Richard Cummings lived a life marked by service, both to his country and to those he loved. His legacy is one of strength, compassion, and an unyielding zest for life. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. As we say farewell to Richard, we celebrate a life well-lived and the countless memories he leaves behind.
